Salvage Project Portfolio

J.L. Stader scouts rural Midwest areas for barns and historic structures which contain the wood of old growth forests from centuries past. This unique wood captures and reveals dense grains with deep, rich color and patina. These timbers display the skill, craftsmanship, and quality of the pioneer ancestors of America who expertly assembled these hand cut, hand fitted structures. We reuse hardwood beams that were once used in timber frame construction in civil war era barns and buildings. We reclaim timbers that once served as hayloft floors, cattle feeding troughs, or the wooden walkway between livestock stalls. We save the hand cut stone that served as the foundation, walls, or floors of these rural barns.

In our journeys, we love to document our discoveries and photography these buildings. J.L. Stader is honored to share the art and beauty we have found in exploring the architectural ancestry of the Midwest.

Unless otherwise noted, these buildings are all ready and waiting to be disassembled and used for your next project. Contact J.L. Stader today to discuss how you can use these reclaimed building timbers in your design.

German Log Barn - Bird's Eye, IN

This early 1800's, German "Double Pen" log barn was located in Bird's Eye, Indiana. A unique characteristic of this German built barn were logs that extended out to create a porch. The barn featured 14" to 20" hand hewn oak log faces and were up to 40' long. This rare building was sold to a builder in Western Montana to be reassembled as a ranch guest house.

Small, White Barn - Greensburg, IN

This 30' x 40' barn contains great hand hewn barn beams. These timbers would provide a beautiful addition to any home design project.

Barn - Tipton, IN

We scouted out this massive barn, located in Tipton, IN, this fall and haven't been able to stop thinking about it! The treasures this barn holds are unparalleled. Stables, beams, antique brick floors, hayloft, you name it. If you are looking for a large quantity of reclaimed wood for a building project, contact us about this barn because we'd love a reason to dismantle it and see the wood reused in a modern design.
